Today CMS is about more than managing content, it is about delivering effective digital experiences across multiple channels. According to Gartner, web content management is “the process of controlling content consumed over one or more digital channels through the use of specific management solutions based on a core repository.” Organizations can choose a CMS that is a commercial product, an open-source tool, a cloud service, or a hosted service.
Selecting the right web content management system is a key part of any organization’s digital transformation. The system should support the organization’s business needs, optimize workflows and integrate with other systems. The Gartner Magic Quadrant for WCM helps evaluators and decision makers identify the most suitable vendor and platform for their needs.
Evaluators selecting a CMS should list their specific use cases and business needs for the system. The Gartner Magic Quadrant for CMS helps evaluators assess how each platform can fulfill these needs. Business needs and use cases can include content creation and content templates, content repositories with metadata, library services, website navigation features, content deployment features, system integrations, and real-time personalization.
The Gartner Magic Quadrant for CMS 2018 assesses a total of 18 vendors. These vendors are categorized in the quadrant according to whether they are a Leader, Challenger, Visionary or Niche Player. The 2018 report Leaders include Sitecore, Adobe, Acquia, Episerver, Oracle, IBM, OpenText and BloomReach.
To be included in the report, each vendor must meet certain criteria. Each vendor’s revenue, for example, must have exceeded $17 million in 2017. The calculation of the vendor’s revenue includes the revenue from sales of WCM software, maintenance and support services, but it does not include the revenue from professional services and the sale of products manufactured by other vendors.
Since the 1990s, Gartner has been creating Magic Quadrant reports to help companies compare software providers. The Gartner Magic Quadrant for WCM is today one of the leading reports on CMS vendors. The report provides in-depth analyses and advice about the CMS market’s direction, maturity and participants.
Gartner’s analysis for the WCM Magic Quadrant is based on several sources. These include extensive data gained through an RFI process with vendors, briefings with vendors about strategies and product roadmaps, surveys from vendor customers, and market share and revenue growth estimates.
